Font.

I decided to use 3 fonts in my video, this was to break things up and I felt it looked better to have different fonts for different things.

For the facts and interview quotes I used the font Besom:

I used this font as it has a calm and friendly feel to it, it was also the only font I had a choice out of that you could see over the pictures, as the others were too thin.

For the names after the quotes I used the font Verano:Screen Shot 2016-05-17 at 20.58.48.png

I used this font as it was thinner than the Besom, and this made the name seperate to the quote in a clean and classy way.

For the titles and questions I used the font Cast Iron:

I used this font as it is bolder than the other ones, giving the impression the writing is more important so to read it.

I think these fonts worked well together and successfully broke down information so it didn’t mash the brain.

I also chose a grey background and white writing as it matches the colour scheme in the interview shots.

Shot List.

I already had a definite shot idea in my head for the interview, however I needed more than just interview footage.

SHOT LIST.jpg

I wanted to create a timelapse of my friend, dressed in white, and people writing ‘pride’ on her to show support. I could’ve used this over the interview to break down the footage. However this was not possible due to time and availability of my friend.

I originally wanted to use the interviews of two of my friends, as this would mean two stories getting out there and being shown. However after doing both interviews and watching back through the footage, it was clear my friend Laura had a much stronger character. From this I decided to make the decision of only using Laura, there are pros to this as it would mean the documentary would be much more personal.

I had first done some sketches with ideas of what I wanted the interview shot to look like.

In the end I didn’t use a banner to display name as I think it looks tacky. And as I was now only using one person I could just put the name at the beginning.

Beginning.

I am happy with the interview shot and I think I have achieved what I had sketched.

Still of interview shot.

As I only had interviews and no other footage I filled the documentary with photographs relevant to what was being said, and I also emailed Laura’s mum and dad, and best friend asking them questions about what they thought when Laura came out to use in the video also.Screen Shot 2016-05-17 at 20.25.52.pngScreen Shot 2016-05-17 at 20.26.06.pngScreen Shot 2016-05-17 at 20.27.27.png

I feel this made it more personal and also emotional.

On the shot list I had also written down about including some facts within my documentary, I did add in facts relevant to what was being said. I feel this broke down the video and also made it more professional and worthwhile.

Interview Questions.

After doing research and gaining an idea of what I want my video to look like I started to think of interview questions.

I took on board some of the facts I had seen as I wanted to get an opinion from someone who experiences being gay everyday.

QUESTIONS.jpg

I was originally going to ask a lot of individual, small questions. However after a tutorial I found it was better to ask more open questions as I would gain more information and it wouldn’t take as long.

Research.

I looked a lot into documentaries about homosexuality to see what was already out there.

Here is a list of the documentaries I found out there:

RESEARCH.jpg

The one I found the most interesting was the Gaycation documentary by Viceland. In this documentary the 2 hosts travel around Tokyo looking at what it’s like to be gay over there. It was very interesting to see they aren’t as accepting in other countries than our own.

Although I liked this documentary the shots they have used are not the kind of shots I had in mind for my own.

The Trembling Before G-D documentary had more the sort of shots I had in mind, as they were proper set up interview environments, and I think this looks neat and professional. This documentary also had images/footage relevant to what the interviewee was saying, which is something I could consider.

I also read a lot of articles to find out more factual information on homosexuality, what I found I would describe as shocking as there are still people who believe homosexuality is a disease or something that needs to be ‘cured’. As I was shocked by this I wanted even more so for my documentary to portray my friends as happy and the normal, kind and wonderful people they are despite them being gay.

Context.

Back home a lot of my friends are gay, and I want to give them to chance to get their story out there.

ThereĀ is still a lot of stigma around being gay – I believe this is down to bad education on the subject. There are still people who believe being homosexual is harmful or a disease, which I find shocking. It has also been found that a lot of people find it hard to come out to friends and family as most of them will experience a negative environment if they do so. In this day and age coming out shouldn’t be something to be ashamed of, it should be a normality just like being heterosexual.

In response to this I want to create a documentary featuring my friends, interviewing them and finding out what it was like for them. I want to feature 2 of my friends so there is a mix of stories, and I also would like to dress my friend in white and have people write ‘pride’ on her to show their support.

The aim of my documentary is to show how positive and happy my friends are now they have come out, and how it isn’t as bad as they thought – in order to help others feel less pressure and stigma for coming out themselves.
